Board Certification

Are all pediatric dentists Board Certified?

Board certification is an extra layer of skill certification provided by the American Board of Pediatric Dentists (ABPD) that not all pediatric dentists attain. The voluntary process involves extra study and preparation in addition to the usual three-year pediatric dentistry program. Only about one third of pediatric dentists are certified. The certification process requires the dentist demonstrate actual achievements in patient care with detailed case reports on the treatment for a broad range of dental issues. In order to become board certified by the ABPD, a dentist is thoroughly interviewed by a highly experienced panel of examiners to demonstrate their knowledge, clinical skills, and judgment.

How many certifying boards are recognized by the American Dental Association in the specialty of dentistry?

The only certifying board recognized by the American Dental Association is the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD).

Why would a pediatric dentist choose to complete this voluntary certification process?

Getting certified by the ABPD demonstrates that the doctor is committed to providing the best and most up-to-date care possible. Certification represents a formal endorsement that a dentist possesses the knowledge and talent to treat patients at the highest standards of medical excellence.
